Hard disks record data magnetizing a magnetic material in a pattern that represents the data. They read the data back by detecting the magnetization of the material. A typical hard disk design consists of a spindle which holds one or more flat circular disks called platters, onto which the data is recorded. The platters are made from a non-magnetic material, usually glass or aluminum, and are coated with a thin layer of magnetic material.
Hard drives are the most important component of any computer, notebook, server, PS2, IPod, camcorder and digital camera.
Every operating system, data base, program, image and file on a computer is written, stored, and read from the computers hard drive. It is for this reason that businesses shell out big dollars for backup and recovery contingancies. If the hard drive fails and there is no adequet back-up system, there is a good chance of data loss, downtime and expensive recovery fees.
Although modern hard drives boast the latest technology, the are in large part mechanical devices, and can be prone to failure.
Hard drive repair and recovery can be very expensive so a preventative maintenance shedule is highly recomended.
It is very impotant to monitor hard drives for fitness for the sole purpose of warning of an impending failure. If caught early enough, the complete drive can be 'imaged' providing a complete 'copy' of the drive. No data is lost and minimal downtime is required.
Symptoms
- 'Clicking' noise
- Loud Noisy Drive
- 'missing NTLDR' Error
- Very Slow Performance
Every computer, motebooke, server and a growing number of electronics use Random Access Memory.Computers use RAM to hold the program code and data during computation. When a word document, program, image, file, or web page is opened, it is found on the hard drive or opened from the internet and loaded into RAM memory. When another doc or page is opened, it is also loaded into memory. This is done to give faster response times. It is quicker to read from RAM than to read from the hard drive.
Computers working at peak performance always have sufficient, properly functioning RAM for their application. The greater the demand , the greater the need for RAM. Graphic designers and webdevelopers deal with massive amounts of video taht require greater amounts of RAM to operate properly. On the other hand, a smple machine that needs only to compose and read mail and surf the web needs much less. Whatever your needs, sufficient and properly functioning RAM is of great importance. As far as upgrades are concerned, adding RAM is the most effective way to boost computing performance.
Symptoms
- ' Blue Screen of Death ' Errors
- Slow Overall Performance
- Programs Open Slowly
- ' Insufficient Resources ' Error
- ' Freezing, Hanging '
Modern computers use a video processor to display video images on the computers monitors screen. There are two kinds of video processors, onboard and expansion. Onboard video processors are integrated into the motherboard chipset. The only way( without exceeding the motherboards value) to repair a failed onboard video processor is to replace the motherboard. You can however ' bypass ' the onboard video processor by installing a video card. Video expansion cards are circuit boards with a video processor as its 'heart'. These video cards are available in three technologies, AGP, PCI and PCI - E.
Symptoms
- No Video
- System Unstable
- System Hangs, Freezes
